HOW DOES THIS WORK?
The whole freebie system is based around affiliate/viral marketing. In one line: people pay to get customers.
Firstly, you sign up to a freebie site, such as Freebiejeebies (FJ), then you have to try out an offer, let's say Lovefilm. Once you try out that offer, Lovefilm pays FJ for bringing them a potential customer, which is you.
The reason that you need to get referrals is that one payment from Lovefilm to FJ isn't enough to fully pay for your gift. Now the referrals must also do an offer, for which FJ are also paid and these contribute towards your gift.
Your referrals can then get their freebie by getting their own referrals and so on.
